Sri Lanka -- Treasure Trove for Shoppers

Sri Lanka, with its rich and diverse culture, has much to offer. Shopping destinations are plentiful and there is a lot to look forward to, from local handicraft stores to modern shopping centers. When visiting Sri Lanka, don’t miss out on its world famous flavorful tea. You will easily find good quality tea in many of the shopping areas in Colombo. Take a break to enjoy a cup, and buy some to take home with you.

Gems

Most of Sri Lanka’s gem dealers are based in Ratnapura, which has been the main center for gems for many centuries now. You will also find exquisite gems in many jewelry shops all around the country. Most of these jewelry shops take requests from visitors who wish to set particular gems into jewelry. The Gem Exchange is situated in Colombo where you will find many gem dealers as well as a government valuation service.

A word of caution for tourists who purchase gems from street markets: Even though these gems are offered at cheap rates, they are not always authentic. When you get back to your hotel, you may realize that the stones are ordinary and not the real gems you expected them to be. Stick with the more reputable and established shops—you’ll still get a good deal, and a greater assurance of authenticity.

Tourists need to be particularly careful not to buy goods that are made of reptile skin, coral, turtle shell, or ivory, as they are being illegally sold, and any purchase will be seized by customs at the international airport.

Handicrafts

One of the best places for buying local handicrafts is Kandy. You will find numerous shops that sell interesting and exotic handicraft items to tourists. A local village close to Kandy has been recently established to house local artisans along with their families. Here you can watch these artisans create beautiful handicraft products and purchase the items on the spot.
